Woodworm
MacMillan Preservation & Building are experienced in the Treatment
of Woodworm. Woodworm is caused by various insects, mainly beetles, which
use wood as a food source. High moisture content is generally, but not
necessarily required to provide the right conditions for an attack.

Common Furniture Beetle
|
- Circular, 1-2mm emergence holes
- Circular 1-2mm tunnel holes
- Cream coloured, lemon shaped pellets of bore dust
|
- Sapwood which has existing degree of wood rot present
- Constructional timbers in contact with damp walls
- Areas affected by damp
|
- Organinc-solvent, emulsion or paste
- Damage in very old timbers may be inactive and would not require
treatment

House Longhorn Beetle |
- Few oval 6-10mm, often ragged emergence holes
- Cream coloured, sausage shaped pellets of bore dust
- Small chips in wood fibres
- Possible audible scraping noise on warm days

- Imported packing cases which are already infested
|
- Organic solvent or paste
- Thorough inspection to determine extent of damage
- Removal and burning of all badly damaged timber
|

Wood Boring Weevil |
- Small ragged 1mm emergence holes
- Numerous tunnels often breaking through to wood surface
|
- Decayed softwoods, hardwoods and plywoods
- Poorly ventilated ground floors or cellars
- Wood in contact with damp solid floors or walls
|
- No insecticidal treatment required
- Remove source of dampness and dry out sound timber
- replace decayed timber
|

Death Watch Beetle |
- Circular 3mm, emergence holes
- Circular, often extensive, 3mm tunnels of random orientation
- Cream coloured, disc shaped pellets of bore dust
|
- Decayed hardwoods
- damp wall plates, ends of floor joists, lintels etc.
|
- Organic solvent or paste
- Inspection of all structural timbers
- Take appropriate measures to reduce dampness
|
